A perfectly serviceable reference copy of this Special Limited Edition, translated from the original German by Fernanda Savage, sold to subscribers only; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Number 890 of 1225 printed copies. Tan paper over boards, tan cloth-backed. Most of the paper label at spine abraded and missing, dings to tips and board edges, very slight forward cock to spine, else clean and unmarked of interior. 208 pp., final endpaper appears to have been removed. An extremely important text in the history of the study of sexuality and erotic. In 1869, Sacher-Masoch conceived a grandiose series of short stories under the collective title "Legacy of Cain," beginning with The Wanderer and then eventually "Venus in Furs," which only heightened the sadism and misogyny, and highlighted the author's own fetishes and fantasies about dominant women. Fore-edges and bottom-edges are rough-cut. Still a sturdy tome. As to Leoopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch's background, he was an Austrian nobleman, writer and journalist, and the clinical psychological terms by which we know him, "masochism," was coined by Richard von Krafft-Ebing.
