About This Item

Mylapore, Madras, India: The President, Sri Ramakrishna Math, 1937. 1st Edition . Flexible Boards. Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. About Near Fine. See description and scans. Mylapore, Madras, India: The President, Sri Ramakrishna Math, 1937. The true first edition of this early and seminal title by Swami Prabhavananda. 12mo, at 7 1/4" x 5"; flexible hardcover navy blue cloth boards; gilt imprinting on front cover; 171 pp. Near Fine; rear cover shows a bit of wrinkle and a small-scale top left corner abrasion (see scan); ont the front pastedown, there is the purple rubber stamped word "India" and adjacent small stain. Otherwise, without flaw. See scans. The deeply scholarly Swami Prabhavananda, a major figure in Vedanta and other Indian religions and religious philosophy, also did much to develop Vedanta in the United States. He was often assisted in his publications by Christopher Isherwood and Frederick Manchester, as well as P.H. Houston, who assisted here. Among his followers were Aldous Huxley and Gerald Heard. Vedic Religion and Philosophy is an early and tightly on-point exposition by the Swami of the title inquiry. It has been often re-printed, but as this true 1937 first edition, is quite scarce. L20n
