This novella has achieved both critical and commercial success. Born in Beira, Moambique, in 1955, the biologist Ant—nio Em’lio Leite Couto, better known as Mia Couto, was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first longer work of fiction, Terra son‰mbula, appeared in 1992; a second, Est—rias abensonhadas, followed in 1994. He has published two books of poems, six collections of short stories, at least one of whichÑVozes anoitecidasÑwas translated into English and published by Heinemann, four books of "Cr—nicas" and eighteen novels or novellas; many of his books have appeared in multiple editions, while they have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan, German, Czech, Swedish, Norwegian, Serbian, Estonian, Dutch and Chinese. The PrŽmio Verg’lio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole, and he was awarded the PrŽmio Cam›es, the most important literary award in the Portuguese language, in 2013, among other prestigious literary prizes. In 1998, Couto was elected into the Brazilian Academy of Letters, the first African writer to receive such an honor. ***
