Remnants of glue from a name plate removed from inside front cover, with foxing on FFEP. Inside covers and first end papers have some darkening along hinges. Green cloth boards are tight & straight, with minor soilage and some scuffing on edges. Gilt design on front cover; gilt lettering and design on spine--clear. 12 short stories by this former war correspondent/journalist, philanthropist set in the "Black Country" in England's industrial area. Stories are dark, tragic, fitting for Tophet, a location for punishment in the Bible.Very nice and rare colletible.

Some wear to corners and spine extremities else VG. All the village agreed that there was something queer and unholy about Mother Gough. Her cottage with the little workshed at its side was the last along the hill, and the children, on their way to the few starved fields and naked refuse-heaps crossed the black road before they came to it, and hurried past with furtive glances at the grim old figure standing there, half revealed by the orange light of her furnace.

A collection of 12 stories, set in the Black country of England. It was the author's second such anthology, the first 'Neighbours of Ours' having been written in Cockney dialect & published in 1895. The author Henry Woodd Nevinson [ 1856 - 1941 ] was a war correspondant who covered the Boer & First World wars, and a political activist.
