Produced at a time when his life was in acute crisis, the drawings evoke a rare world of grotesque truth and sublime transcendence. It includes an analytical introductory essay by Robert Ansell discussing the development of Spare’s magic-aesthetic. Published here for the first time, this important sketchbook can be considered a companion volume to The Book of Ugly Ecstasy.

One of the major lost works, this unpublished sketchbook of 20 vigorous, yet haunting, studies was created during a bleak period in Spare's life. Designed as a companion volume with UGLY ECSTASY (Fulgur, 1996), these delicately tinted original drawings have been reproduced in full color. The work has been augmented by an introductory essay by Robert Ansell in which the metaphysical and magical themes are explored, and Spare's methodologies for creating states of magical aesthesis for his audience are examined and discussed. Large quarto, printed in full color in a premium binding with dust jacket. Limited issue of 741 numbered copies.
