About This Item

ASHBY, Thomas A[lmond]. The Valley Campaigns: Being the Reminiscences of a Non-Combatant While Between the Lines in the Shenadoah Valley During the War of the States. New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1914. 1st ed. 327 pp. Orig. cloth. A near fine copy. Although Thomas Ashby did not participate in the war, his allegiance and sentiments were tied to the South. "From his home in Front Royal, young Ashby witnessed Jackson's 1862 campaign, a succession of Federal occupations and life in and around a Confederate hospital in the town. He was caught up in the midst of the May 23, 1862, battle at Front Royal, which he aptly describes as 'more like a police riot than a fight between soldiers.' The valuable personal reminiscences are interlarded with considerable superficial summerization of events elsewhere in Virginia, but the first-person accounts of four years of war in the Valley are worth searching out." Krick 11. A near fine copy.
