Chicago: Printed for the author by De Vinne Press, NYC, 1891. First Edition, First Printing. Good. 288pp. [p. iii-xi List of subscribers: , xii-xxi, 3-287, printer's colophon]. 19cm. Hardcover. Publisher's original cream colored vellum and pale green silk over boards, gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Book Condition: Covers worn to the boards at the corners and edges, spine cracked at the joint for 1" from head; titling visible on spine and front cover but just so on the spine. Binding quite sound. Previous owners bookplate to front paste down, text block otherwise unmarred. This is the true first edition, a 300 copy limited edition published for subscribers only. This is no. 177of 300 copies printed. Signed by the author, Harriet Monroe, on the limitation page. Harriet Monroe is probably best know as the Founder of Poetry (founded as, Poetry: A Magazine of Verse). Poetry has been published in Chicago since 1912. It is one of the leading monthly poetry journals in the English-speaking world. In 2007 the magazine had a circulation of 30,000, and printed 300 poems per year out of approximately 100,000 submissions. With a printer's colophon at the end of the book with what looks like a facsimile signature of the printer, Theodore l. De Vinne.
