Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1982, US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, oblong 10 x 9 1/2, VG/VG condition, ( very minor dj wear head of spine), 331 pages, massively illustrated with photos and drawings. --------------------------------------From 1939 through 1945, the U.S. Coast Guard greatly expanded the scope of its operations and the number of its personnel to meet wartime demands. At the height of the war, 425 Coast Guard cutters were in operation, along with more than 4,000 small craft. Of these, some 2,000 were newly constructed, and hundreds more were acquired from private sources as emergency acquisitions. In addition, the Coast Guard manned nearly 300 vessels that operated under Navy control, and almost as many for the Army. With this expansion of the Coast Guard came many new responsibilities that, until now, have been poorly documented. The broad range of the service's operations will come as a revelation to many. Few people, for example, are aware of the Coast Guard's development of the first worldwide electronics navigation system (LORAN), one of the Allies' closely guarded secrets, or of the Coast Guard's participation in dangerous amphibious landings in the Pacific, and in antisubmarine warfare in the Atlantic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In U.S. Coast Guard Cutters and Craft, the vessels that carried out these vital tasks are finally given the attention they so richly deserve. From formerly classified Coast Guard records and other primary materials, author Robert Scheina, the Coast Guard's official historian, brings together here for the first time detailed information on all Coast Guard cutters and craft that served during World War II. Since many of the original sources he used to research the book are no longer available, this comprehensive guide is certain to stand as the definitive study of the subject for years to come. The book provides key dates, design and building information, characteristics, electronic equipment and armament, an operational summary for each class of cutters and craft that served in the Coast Guard during World War II, and individual ship histories. There are scaled line drawings for each of the major cutter classes, plus more than 200 detailed photographs, many previously unpublished, of the various ships and smaller craft. Organized by vessel type, the book includes gunboats, submarine chasers, patrol boats, tugs, buoy tenders, and lightships, along with numerous others. Appendices contain listings of all ships manned by the Coast Guard under the wartime operational control of the Army and the Navy. U.S. Coast Guard Cutters and Craft adds a new dimension to the maritime history of World War II.
