New York: U.S. Camera, 1938. First Edition. This debut issue of Steichen's long-lived and influential photographic quarterly was clearly intended to make a statement, showcasing work by Steichen, Edward Weston, Eliot Porter, Arnold Genthe, Rockwell Kent, and others. Includes a major philosophical essay, "Good Pictures," by Steichen. The magazine was printed on thick paper and featured photoengraving of a quality previously unprecedented in a mass-production periodical; but because of the awkward spiral-bound format, early issues of this journal are usually encountered only in marginal condition; this an attractive copy indeed. Quarto (31cm). Spiral-bound, pictorial wrappers; pp72; illus. Slight rolling and soil to covers; internally clean and unmarked; bound edge still firmly attached, with none of the usual separation along perforations; Very Good Plus.
