Upside-down justice: the Albany cases

  • Used
Albany, GA: National Committee for the Albany Defendants, 1964. Pamphlet. 9p., staplebound pamphlet, very good, illustrated with photos of civil rights activists sentenced for participation in the Albany campaign, 5.5x8.5 inches. Martin Luther King was the honorary chair of this committee. Albany was one of the places where white racists defeated the SCLC. White student Joni Rabinowitz was a key plaintiff in one of these cases, which was appealed to the US Fifth Circuit Court. It was proven that Rabinowitz had not been at the scene during the demonstration in question. While this piece was published in 1964, the case did not go to trial until 1966 and Rabinowitz's and the black plaintiffs' convictions were overturned. The Albany campaign has been historically considered a defeat, but it inspired the successful Birmingham desegregation campaign.
