London: Smith, Elder and Co. 1862. 12mo. xviii, 174 pp. Publisher's green cloth with gilt-stamped borders to front & rear boards and gilt-lettered spine. All edges gilt. Brown endpapers. Early ink name to ffep. Slight foxing, mostly to prelims. Ruskin's essays on social economics were 'very violently criticised' when first published in Cornhill in 1860. But he countered by republishing all four essays in 1862. They talk about a living wage and criticise capitalist economics. It's a a book which impacted on Gandhi, who changed his life according to Ruskin's teaching after first reading it in 1904. He also set up Phoenix Settlement as a result. Fine copy. . Fine.
