Description:
London England: John Lehmann, 1950. Hardback. The Unfortunate Traveller or The Life of Jacke Wilton. Illustrated by Michael Ayrton, With an Introduction. Heavy foxing to end inside covers and edge. Slightly worn corners to cloth. Light blue cloth with gilt lettering. I cannot claim sufficient authority to write a literary introduction to The Unfortunate Traveller. I am unable to assess its calue as literature, nor can I judge its particular effect upon subsequent prose fiction. Certain eminent critics, notably the late Edmund Gosse and that bitter versifier and vastly erudite litterateur the late Sir Walter Raleigh II thought highly of Nashe and particularly of The Unfortunate Traveller. On the other hand, Professor Saintsbury did not. Nashe was a hack by profession, an Elizabethan journalist, whom professor Saintsbury compares to 'one of the not quite best class of 'newspaper men' - Thackeray's Bohemians'. What he possessed over and above the qualifications required of this humble…

Description:
London: John Lehmann, 1948. Black plate and gold lettering on the spine. Claimed to be the first picaresque novel in the English language. The text follows that of the second edition printed in London by T. Scarlet for C. Burby in 1594. With an introduction and 15 full page black and white plates and one tailpiece by Michael Ayrton. Thomas Nashe (1567 - 1601) was an English Elizabethan pamphleteer, playwright, poet and satirist. 'The Unfortunate Traveller: or the Life of Jack Wilton' (1594) is a picaresque novel set during the reign of Henry VIII of England. The narrator, Jack Wilton, describes his adventures as a page during the wars against the French, and his subsequent travels in Italy as page to the Earl of Surrey. In his travels, Jack witnesses numerous atrocities, including battlefields, plague, and rape: at one point he is nearly hanged, and at another, he is on the point of being cut up in a live anatomy demonstration. Jack's narrative climaxes by describing the brutal revenge…

Description:
London and Edinburgh: John Lehmann, 1948 . Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 9" by 6". Michael Ayrton. A beautiful illustrated edition of Thomas Nashe's sixteenth century novel in the original dust wrapper. Illustrated edition of The Unfortunate Traveller or The Life of Jacke Wilton by Thomas Nashe in the original publisher's cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. Originally published in 1594, the novel is set during the reign of Henry VIII of England and is described as a picturesque novel of prose fiction by the Elizabethan satirist and poet. The first thus of this edition illustrated by Michael Ayrton, with fifteen monochrome plates. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. There is some light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The dust wrapper is worn with a large closed tear to the rear board, some slight loss to the tail of the spine, and some small tears and creases to the extremities.…
