About This Item

London, George Routledge and Sons, (1878).. FIRST EDITION (1878), small 4to, 235 x 190 mm, 9¼ x 7½ inches, blue cloth backed green glazed boards with pink and white illustration of little children in a ring around the title panel, all edges yellow, dark blue endpapers, 64 pages each with very pretty coloured illustrations of small sweet children at play, the girls all in exquisite 'Empire' line dresses and huge bonnets. Minute touch of rubbing to corners of boards, very small area of slight bubbling to lower cover next to top of spine, no inscriptions, minute pale grey smudge to face of 1 little girl on title page, barely visible (see image), otherwise a Fine clean bright tight copy. Collates exactly as Schuster 1b. He states that on the covers the children are printed white on olive green, whereas in all copies they are actually printed in white and pink on olive green. Schuster lists 11 variants of the first edition of this first book written and illustrated by Greenaway. Our edition contains 3 illustrations dropped from later editions (pages 21, 35 and 63), one of which is an ugly witch and another is a hideous old man who has snatched little Billy and is running away with him. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
