About This Item

London: Methuen, 1911. First edition. Conrad labored for several years over this work, which was written after the failed Russian Revolution of 1905. He suffered a nervous breakdown after delivering it to his publisher, of which his wife, Jessie Conrad, wrote: "he lives mixed up in the scenes and holds converse with the characters." One of only 2,250 copies. Red cloth with spine lettering and design stamped in gold; 32-page publisher's catalog dated September 1911 at rear. (Copies are variously noted with catalogs dated August or September). Spine slightly faded, minor nicks to spine ends, otherwise very good.

Synopsis

Under Western Eyes is a novel by Joseph Conrad. The novel takes place in St. Petersburg, Russia and Geneva, Switzerland and is viewed as Conrad's response to the themes explored in Crime and Punishment; Conrad being reputed to have detested Dostoevsky. This novel is considered to be one of Conrad's major works and is close in subject matter to The Secret Agent. It is full of cynicism and conflict about the historical failures of revolutionary movements and ideals.
