Probably the greatest book ever published on the subject. Publisher Hawley was an expert on Japanese culture. He published many things, including huge charts and posters on Japanese and Chinese language, samurai swords and cultural history. He also had an excellent collection of Japanese Samurai Swords. He lived in Los Angeles on top of a hill, with about 100 steps up as anyone who was there in the 1970s or 1980s will remember climbing. This is the First Edition for General Distribution, January 1996, which came out a few months after the small Limited Edition. The Table of Contents includes: The Early Period-An Age of Legends; The Middle Period - The Founding Fathers; The Inter-War Period- Okinawan Pioneers in Japan and Redefining an Art on Okinawa; Modern Karate - A New Generation and a New Sport; History and Developement of Kata The Quintessential Element; The Karatedo Mokuroku no Kata - A Kata Catalogue; Okinawan Weaponry Koeujutsu - Art Within an Art; Philosophy and Fighting; Karatedo Chronology; Glossary of Terms; Insignias and Bibliography. 350 pages. Scarce in decent condition. This is the original, not the later reprint. At times this sells for almost $3,000. depending on availability of this First Edition.
