This Republican politician from Florida served the Sunshine State first as U.S. representative (1963-69) then as U.S. senator (1969-74). TQS, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Gurney signs large and bold in blue ballpoint at center this card on which an admirer typed near the bottom one of his better-known statements: "The United States is the only country where it takes more brains to figure your tax than to earn the money to pay it."

Attractive miniature book, bound in full red wallet-style leather, all edges gilt, complete with leather tonge but missing the tie, some rubbing, pencil inscription, ink date. Attributed to Elizabeth Fry; preface signed Upton Lane, 4th Month, 1831; this was Elizabeth Fry's home at the time, and the numeration in the calendar follows Quaker practice in numbering months and days. The Undersigned had the Honor of being the Deputation appointed to present to the Emperor Louis Napoleon the Declaration of Amity and Respect towards the French nation signed by upwards of 4000 Merchant Bankers and Trades of the City of London. Presented to the Emperor at the Palace of the F... 28th March 1853. Signed by nine including William Gladstone, Sam Gurney, Edward Burton Bt, J D Powles, James Duke Bart etc. Size is 227mm x 188mm.
