New York: December 29th, 1919., 1919.. Fine. - 34 words typed in blue ink on a cream-colored sheet of letterhead folded once to form 4 sides, each approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 6 inches wide, with his address printed at the top. Signed "A Barton Hepburn". Folded once for mailing. Fine.

In late December 1919 tour manager James B. Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau, New York City, invited a number of distinguished citizens to a reception welcoming Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck to the United States and to his first lecture at Carnegie Hall on January 2nd, 1920. Hepburn writes that he will be present "at M. Maeterlinck's opening lecture at Carnegie Hall...and will meet you in the Green Room, as requested."

Lawyer and New York State Assemblyman A. Barton Hepburn [1846-1922] was Superintendent of the New York State Banking Department and National Bank Examiner for New York City and Brooklyn before his appointment as Comptroller of the Currency by President Benjamin Harrison. He served in this post from 1892 to 1893, An internationally recognized authority on financial and economic questions, Hepburn returned to banking when President Grover Cleveland took office. He later succeeded Henry W. Cannon as president of the Chase National Bank.
