Vol. I: Pp. xxviii; 245. Vol. II: Pp. 246 - 496. Prefatory note by Lester K. Little, Inspector General of Customs, in Vol. I. Both vols. with b&w photo frontispieces. Glossary. Vol. I with a contemporary gift inscription on ffep. Vol. II with same owner's name in English and Mandarin, as well as his chop in red ink. Both volumes exceedingly bright, which attests to their good care over the years.
According to Worcester, "China holds scholarship in high honor, but apparently they did not concern themselves with naval history or nautical lore." Worcester stepped in to fill that void of works on traditional sailing craft: While working in anti-smuggling operations in the Marine Department, Worcester took an interest in traditional Chinese sailing design, which included maritime design in operation for some two-thousand years. Inspector General Maze, noticing GRGW's writing and drawing ability, placed him full time in the Chinese Nautical Research Department. For eight years he traveled through China, during the war of resistance against Japanese invaders. His ultimate aim: As with Joseph Needham, to restore pride and history of the Chinese people. At t his point Worcester is listed as Assistant River Inspector. Although both volumes can be readily found, condition of this set warrants desirability.

Description:
This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.
