London: James Ridgway, 1792.. Third edition, 8vo, 36, (4 advertisement) pp. First and last page with some soiling. 20th century quarter calf, marbled sides. Dundas was Home Secretary in Pitt's government, which in May of 1792 had issued a proclamation against "wicked and seditious writings" and summoned Paine to appear in court as a result of the publication of the second part of "The Rights of Man". Paine angrily expands his arguments, comparing the British and American systems of government, and signs off "I am, Mr. Dundas, Not your obedient humble Servant, But the contrary..." Onslow had arranged a public meeting to celebrate the proclamation, and on being handed Paine's letter at the meeting called him "the common enemy of us all", something that Paine confirms in the second letter "if you confine the expression to men... living in indolence and luxury, on the spoil and labours of the Public". Gimbel p119. Sabin 58243. First thus, preceded by various issues of letters to one or both Onslow and Dundas.
