Red, cloth-covered boards with black lettering on the spine, blue printer's stain to the top edge, 1935 stated at the foot of the title page. Subtitled "A London Trilogy" this book contains three linked stories: The Midnight Bell, Bob; The Siege of Pleasure, Jenny; The Plains of Cement, Ella. Introduction by J. B. Priestley. No faults for the book, no inscriptions; this is the best copy of this book we have seen. The dust jacket is not price-clipped, has minor wear only and a small damp mark on the spine; the top and bottom of the spine have been guarded by rice paper and paste on the reverse (a reversible process) because the ends were becoming brittle, protected by a clear, removable cover. Few copies of the first edition have survived with their original dust jacket and rarely come to market, particularly in this condition.
