London, UK.: Chapman and Hall. Good. 1888. Hardcover. 8vo - 22 x 14.5 cm.; xii - [2] - 423 pp plus 40 pages of additional books from the publisher. Green cloth over boards with gilt lettering on spine and ruled black multi-line border on the front and back boards. This is the second edition and produced in one complete volume. Illustrated with 14 drawings (all present) by the author and one fold out map at the back which has four place names written on it in red pencil from a previous and unknown owner. The front and back hinges are starting with tearing in the end paper gutters. The binding is a tad shaken though still quite solid. The externals show moderate wear with bumped and rubbed corners and spine ends along with some scuffing of the cloth on the boards. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. .

FINE inside. f/o map w two 1" tears & one shorter, all w old tape repairs. . Worn, spine ends torn. Gilt on spine letters totally faded. 1st publ, also by C&H, in 1887 in two vols. Title was "25 years in a Waggon in Gold Regions of Africa". This 1888 edition contains about 20% new material. Author travelled thru Natal, Griqualand, Namaqualand, Damaraland & Ovampoland; commenting on hunting, the animal population & the various Africans encountered. Seems to be an unbiased (for the time) observer. He frequently sees the members of many tribes to be better off than their European counterparts. He almost died of thirst crossing the Kalahari. .
