Text is clean and unmarked in a square and tight binding. Card holder is attached to a back free end paper. Library stamps on the outer edges of the text block. Volume appears little used. DJ has been protected in a plastic cover. Plastic cover is taped to the binding. leaving tape stains to the inside front and back boards. From the front DJ flap, "This book is concerned primarily with the development of the English sentence during the three centuries from Caxton to Johnson, but it also throws new light on the living relations today between standard and substandard speech, between syntax and style, between language and literature."
