Tropic Of Capricorn by Miller, Henry - 1939

Paris: Obelisk Press. F/VG+. 1939. 1st Edition. Softcover with DJ; 1st Printing. Published (and printed) by the Obelisk Press in Paris in 1939. Price 60FRS printed to spine and to the lower part of the original wrappers/dustj acket front flap - in both places it has been partially marked through with a black marker by the publisher but no other price has been marked in or on the book. Noted on the copyright page as First Published February 1939, it has the called-for yellow errata sheet bound in before the title page, and the original 60FRS price, so all points are present for the 1st issue of the First Edition. The dustjacket is bound to the book at the spine with no underlying mull (the cloth normally between the text block and the spine cloth or paper wraps). This book just has the gatherings sewn together under the dustjacket/wrappe r paper so the edges of the gatherings make the spine dustjacket surface ripple vertically when it is handled at all (all these Miller Obelisk books 'are' fragile). So there are the gatherings' vertical ridges on the spine, some light edgewear and some folding under of edges to the dustjacket all around since it is a bit taller than the text block, and some shallow edge chipping to the upper spine edge. The white portions of the dustjacket (front borders, spine and back panel) have tanned somewhat with age. But the book is clean, straight, complete, no handwriting or markings (other than Obelisk marking through the price twice on the dustjacket). Read, but carefully. We've cut a stiff clear removable mylar cover for the book to protect the edges in future and keep condition as it is now. Printed in Paris, of course, since Mr. Miller's books were banned in the U.S. till 1961. ; 7-9/16" x 5-1/2"; 367 pages .
