About This Item

New York: Baker and godwin(printers), 1862. First Edition. Octavo. 385pp.The first news of the capture of the Savannah was written in Harpers Weekly June 29, 1861. The Savannah was said to have attacked and captured a ship at sea and then attacked another ship. Much to the surprise and regret of her crew, the second vessel turned out to be U.S. Navy warship, which turned the tables on Savannah, taking the ship and her crew of 20 men into custody. The case was tried and ended in a hung jury. Why? Most likely because a privateer is considered a pirate with authorization to carry out his work from for the government. Bound in black cloth (early rebinding), spine lettering gilt on original cloth label, one corner with wear through, damp stain to upper edge of title page and extending through the first 23 leaves, endpapers were renewed except the rear pastedown which in the original yellow. A good copy of this important trial. [Nevins I, p. 233].
