"The pages of the Tree may help to modify in some slight degree certain misconceptions as to the Middle Ages, though it can scarcely be hoped that adjective "mediaeval" will cease to be used as a term of ultimate condemnation of what is disliked. We can take from these pages first-hand evidence of mediaeval use of justice and law, of tolerance and pity; of mediaeval scales of value and standards of conduct, both for the individual and fork great ones of the Earth.
