An interesting 18th century woodblock-print of 'A Treatise on National Defense of a Maritime Nation.' Considering the situation in Russia of that time, Shihei expressed his opinion on the national defense of Japan as a maritime nation. This book offended the governmental authorities, the woodcuts were confiscated, and Shihei was put under confinement for the rest of his life.

Pieter de Neyn's "Lust-hof der Huwelyken" is a late 17th-century treatise on the ceremonial customs and rites of weddings and funerals from around the world. Neyn covers numerous cultures including natives of Brazil, Native American Indians, Southern Asia, and India, as well as African tribes. Neyn also gives attention to notable Dutch voyagers including Jan Huyghen van Linschoten.
However, the greatest appeal of this work is Neyn's consideration of the Americas. According to Sabin, this work
"[known as] The Pleasant Matrimonial Garden, treats the following American tribes: Appalachians, Brazilians, Inhabitants of Guiana, Florida, Ingas (i.e. Incas), New-Netherland, New-France, Virginia."

Thomas Thornton was an 18th-century English hunter known for his sporting tours and outdoor sports. Shortly after the French Revolution in 1802, Thornton ventured to France in hopes of obtaining a large French estate. And while the purchase failed, he was befriended by Napoleon
and gained significant knowledge on the landscape, tradition, culture, and hunting history of France.
In 1806 he published a book on his discovery entitled 'A Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France'. This two volume set includes more than 50 engravings, many folding, of French architecture, hunting supplies, landscapes and chateaus (including Versailles!), as well as illustrated hunting scenes!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

Large ink and water colour manuscript map of Ezo, modern day Hokkaido, showing the northeastern tip of Honshu, Manchuria as a large landmass along the lower border, and the island of Sakhalin. The Russian territory of Kamchatka is also shown. Drawn on a single washi sheet and hand coloured Sakhalin is shaded green; Matsumae Domain is the same colour as the rest of Japan; Russian territory is coloured pink; but Manchuria, Karafuto, Hokkaido and the 'Thousand Isles of Ezo' all seem to be the same yellowish colour. Contains descriptions about the outside world. The delicate Japanese paper has been re-backed using washi paper and old and some newer repairs are present. Repairs at some folds, two professionally filled, there is some creasing along the folds, some minor chipping in margins not affecting the image, light stain in the sea just off Sakhalin, some mild time toning.
