Treatise on the Culture of the Vine... Together with new hints on the formation of vineyards in England

by SPEECHLY, William

  • Used
York: Printed by G. Peacock for the author, 1790. Closed tear to p. 149.. Quarto, five engraved plates (three folding), a most attractive copy in nineteenth-century straight grained red half morocco, label to front board, spine gilt, armorial bookplate.

First edition: "a practical, well-written and beautifully printed manual" (Hyams).

William Speechly (1735-1819) was a famous English horticulturalist, who had made his name perfecting the growing of pineapples (an eighteenth-century English craze) in England. At this point in his career Speechly was gardener at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire, the house of the third Duke of Portland, to whom he dedicated this book. Speechly describes some 50 varieties of grape, and discusses all manner of practical questions relating to vineyards, including a long discussion on hothouses. Although printed in York, it is interesting to note that the London distributors included Nicol (who published Cook's third voyage), as well as both Stockdale and Debrett who, at the time, were publishing the First Fleet journals.

It has been assumed that the first edition was in fact an undated edition at London, but this seems unlikely as the London edition is an expanded work, and Speechly was based in Nottinghamshire and had connections to Yorkshire (his first gardening position had been at Castle Howard).

. Provenance: From the library of Charles William Vane, third Marquess of Londonderry, with armorial bookplate.

The Modern Press. 1886. First separate issue, larger untrimmed variant, inscribed by the author. Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. This is the larger, variant issue, with the preliminary blank leaf bound at the beginning. Shaw explains the variant this way: "The size of the bigger copies is due to the fact that they reproduced not only the type but the format of To-day. But the booksellers objected that in this form it occupied too much room to be displayed on their stalls and counters. It was probably cut down as far as the margins would allow to meet this objection" (Laurence). Inscribed by Shaw, "This is the first Issue, which was so tall that the booksellers refused to exhibit it on their counters, as it took too much room. So it had to be cut down. G. Natural history Monographs . 1st. Ed. Pub. Peregrine Books. 2000. pp.xii, 249 with illus. 8vo. New hardback in new dw. RRP. £27.00. The distinguished naturalist, Derek Ratcliffe, passed away in 2005 aged 75. Born in 1929, this book tells the tale of his life from boyhood, when his interest in birds, butterflies, moths and dragonflies started to develop, through to the period in his life before 1970. Ratcliffe took the opportunity presented by writing this book of paying tribute to some of the people who helped him along the way and became lifelong friends.
