About This Item

London: T Cadell, 1789 A fair copy of the 1st edition in 3 volumes. Classed as 'fair' because the contemporary full calf bindings are very worn, and because the map of Switzerland from Vol I is absent. William Coxe was a historian and priest who travelled widely - mainly as a tutor and companion to the wealthy. He was a keen observer who wrote and later published detailed accounts of his travels. In Travels in Switzerland he provides both detail on scenery, flora and fauna, and on history and social issues. This copy is in contemporary calf. Vol II has a replacement plain spine of the 'do it yourself' variety; Vols I looks to have a newer spine aged to match the original; Vol III has the original spine with title labels and gilt compartments. All the boards are present, but the front board is detached in Vol III. The contents are in very good clean condition and all the plates are present, together with the large fold out map of Mont Blanc. Vol I: lacks fep and preliminaries; title page with ink signature to top; dedication; preface; contents; text pp 1-428 with 2 plates. Clean - light marking to bottom margin pp 16-21 and small dark mark in side margin pp 269-71. Vol II: title page with signature; dedication; map and plate list; contents; large fold out Mont Blanc; text pp 1-398 with 2 plates - one folding (bearded Vulture); Appendix pp 401-408; Supplement pp 409-422; errata to all 3 vols. Clean - some spotting pp 210-321. Small repair to fold out Mont Blanc where attached to the book. Vol III: title page with signature; dedication; introduction; contents; text pp 1-329 with genealogical table; half title Faunula Helvetica; text pp 332-392; Appendix pp 395-416; Index pp 417-446. Clean, some spotting pp 193-201. small piece missing from top margin p 443 repaired tear to top margin p445. Please enquire if you would like to see more images to further assess condition.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
