London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1813., 1813.. Fair. - Octavo, 6-7/8 inches high by 4-1/8 inches wide. Bound in plain gray publisher's boards. The spine is lacking and the front cover is detached. The boards are rubbed, soiled and bumped with wear to the edges. iv & 380 deckle-edged pages, illustrated with a folding map of Africa and 4 full-page plates. There is occasional minor foxing. Good. <p>This is volume 21 - complete in itself - of a 28 volume set.<p>The book includes Francois Le Vaillant's "Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa, by M. Le Vaillant, performed in the Years 1780, 81, 82, 83, 84, and 85". Le Vaillant's Travels are illustrated with 2 plates respectively titled: "Le Vaillant discovered by his Hottentot Servant while seeking refuge from an enraged Elephant" and "Le Vaillant crowning Haripa King of the Koraques".<p>Le Vaillant's travels are followed by William George Browne's "Travels in Egypt and Libya, by Mr. Browne, from the year 1792 to 1798. Browne's travels are illustrated with a folding map of Africa and a plate titled "A Public Audience at El Fasher".<p>Concluding this volume is John Barrow's "Travels in the Interior of Southern Africa, by Mr. John Barrow, in the Years 1797 and 1798". Barrow's travels are illustrated with a plate depicting "A Hottentot Shepherd attacked by a Lion".<p>From the library of geologist and mining engineer James Douglas, after whom Douglas, Arizona was named, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Douglas, who was born in Quebec, spent much of his early life in Scotland. For many years, as a metallurgist and mining engineer, he was involved in several important Western American enterprises.

London: Printed at the Minerva Press for Lane, Newman, and Co., Leadenhall-Street, 1807. About good in well-worn blue paper board with spine label with substantial loss, hinges loose, prior owner name to title page, some soiling and dog-eared pages, but contents generally clean. Nevertheless desirable as a very scarce item.. Scarce Minerva Press imprint of two travel works. Curiously, apart from the Minerva title page, this volume seems identical to Volume XXII of Mavor's Historical account of the most celebrated voyages, travels, and discoveries, from the time of Columbus to the present period . . . (1801), even containing the same pagination, printer imprint, and volume numbering (as Minerva was known to place their imprint on those of other publishers). 12mo. [viii], [1]-318. Frontispiece and engravings at pgs. 93 and 265. Not in Blakey. Not is McLeod. Two copies located on Worldcat as of February 2021 (Yale and NLS).
