Full calf prize binding, raised bands to spine with decorative gilt inlays and leather labels (chipped). Gilt rules, edge motifs and inner gilt curlicues. Marbled edges and endpapers. Some minor spotting and occasional light foxing, a few small nicks to covers. Minor shelf wear. Inscription to "Miss Blunt" to ffep. A handsome firmly bound volume.
Sir Charles Thomas Newton (1816-1894) KCB. British archaeologist, born at Bredwardine, Herefordshire. Vice-consul at Mytilene, Consul at Rhodes, with responsibility for the British Museum's interests in the Levant. Acquisitor and Keeper of Greek and Roman antiquities at the British Museum. His discovery of the ruins at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is here described, together with discoveries at Branchidae, Knidos and others.
