London: Richard Phillips, 1809. First published in three volumes in 1808. 8vo. 316, (4, index) pp. Howes A-352: "Interesting in spite of its snarling asperity and numerous lies." Sabin 2180 (quoting Edinburgh Review): "An unmeasured hatred of the Americans pervades the whole of [the] narrative. His account of the Atlantic states forms the most comprehensive piece of national abuse we ever recollect to have perused. Their inhabitants it seems are all abominably vicious, but in degrees: the middle states being bad, the northern very bad, and the southern execrable." Clark Old South II, 134: "Enlivened by misrepresentation and exaggeration, Ashe's account is interesting and highly readable." Engraved bookplate of J.T. Pocock on front pastedown. Very good. Later brown boards, black spine title, all edges marbled. (9129).

Description:
London: Printed For Richard Phillips By B.McMillan, 1809. Second Edition, abridged from the original in three volumes issued the previous year. An extremely unflattering view of America and Americans by a man whose entire career Clark notes “was checkered with intrigue, misrepresentation, and fraud. Embarking on the Ohio in April, 1806, Ashe and two servants began a trip to New Orleans on a flatboat…The chief reason for his journey was an intense interest in archaeological remains. He uncovered Indian tombs, sought bones of extinct animals, and climaxed his trip by swindling Dr. William Goforth out of a skeleton of a mammoth. Enlivened by misrepresentation and exaggeration, Ashe’s account is interesting and highly readable. Apparently he realized that a book devoted largely to the condemnation of Americans would be profitable.” (Clark) “Interesting in spite of its snarling asperity and numerous lies.” (Howes) Clark II 134 (2). Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
