Captain Frederick Marryat (July 10, 1792 - August 9, 1848) was an English novelist, a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story. This book was written by Marryat after his visit to North America, during which he wrote his "Diary in America". It shows an enormous and deep knowledge of the more southern States, and of the Indian tribes that lived therein.
