Paris: Transition, 1928. First Edition. Bowles's first periodical appearance outside his Jamaica, NY high school magazine The Oracle, printing his surrealist poem "Spire Song." Additional contributions by James Joyce (Work in Progress, Part III), Breton's opening chapter of Nadja, Gertrude Stein's "Don Rafael, A Nephew," and works by Benjamin Péret, Laura Riding, Marcel Noll, Morley Callaghan, Raymond Roussel, Peter Neagoe, Man Ray, Francis Picabia, and others. Miller C44; Slocum & Cahoon C70. Octavo (19.25cm); printed wrappers; [6],7-194,[10]pp; illus. Wrappers sunned (particularly at spine), edgeworn, with shallow loss to spine ends, faint dampstaining to front wrapper, and a 3" split along upper front joint, and a short horizontal tear at right edge of front wrapper; tanning to text edges, else contents clean; a Good to Very Good, complete copy.
