Engraved frontispiece. 1 leaf of publisher's ads at rear. Spine rolled, binding rubbed, spotting and toning of contents, primarily in the margins. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Author Constance de Salm (1767-1845) was a highly regarded French writer and moral philosopher, and an important member of a circle of leading intellectuals and scientists. Though forgotten for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, she is now the subject of renewed academic interest, providing a window onto the lives and intellectual networks of women in Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. De Salm spent most of her life promoting the equality of women, and her most important work, the poem Épître aux femmes (1797), was a direct attack on the language and social structures that uphold patriarchy, as well as an exhortation to women to liberate… Read More

1792 Diderot Encyclopedia 88 Plates HOROLOGY Clock Making WATCHES Horse Riding
Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie'
changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.
One of the aspects that made this work so desirable was the incredible, detailed full-page engravings. In fact, the illustrations themselves were so sought-after that they were of published on their own apart from the encyclopedia.
This volume of 'De Planches', or the plates from Diderot's encyclopedia include some of the following engravings:
·
Horology
o Mechanics of watch and clock making,… Read More

1789 George Keate Account of Pelew Islands Philippines War Palau South Pacific

George Keate's "Account of the Pelew Islands" is a rare 18th-century description of the Pelew people and Oceania regions of the South Pacific including the Philippines and other Pacific islands. Keate wrote this work was based on the account of Henry Wilson, an English sailor in the East India Company. His ship, the Antelope, was shipwrecked off of the Palau islands. Following the premier in 1788, this book became immensely popular to readers in England, a book in which Keate described the local Pelew people as savages and drew in audiences with descriptions of unknown and unfamiliar lands.

Keate's 'Account' gives descriptions of coral Reefs, manners and customs of the natives, details of battles and local wars, weapons and military tactics, canoe making, and more.

This 1789 edition includes a section on the vocabulary of the Pelew language.

1848 Mississippi Exploration Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana Monette

'History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi' is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi river. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.
"The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history" (Field).

This 1848 edition includes:
·
First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 --
·
Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696 -… Read More

A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties.
