Kidwell photographic studio, Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas. Sent from Syracuse, Kansas by Robert Popkins to his parents Sept. 20 and to his brother Chas. Aug. 7, both living in Halstead, Kansas. The cards titled No. 1 View of Syracuse and New Steel Bridge, Syracuse, Kans. In the message to his brother Robert describes a 2 1/2 hour trip with his mulke team "down to Syracuse" "had a runaway and then made them travel the rest of the way." He also mentions "it is still windy out here and the dust blows a fright". The one to his parents mentions "stayed all night in Bucklin and came to Dodge this morn. Caught No.9 here will see my Co. Russ Lord". The Civilian Conservation Corp was established by Congress March 31, 1933 as part of Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, as a way to provide jobs for young, unemployed men during the Great Depression. The Panaca, Nevada "outfit" built the water tower at Cathedral Gorge State park among other projects in the area. Near Fine, top edge a bit dusty, in a Very Good dust jacket, old tape mends, spine faded. Introduction by William Allen White, 310 pp. including bibliography, illustrated with more than 30 black and white photos, mostly credited to named individuals who were part of the SCS (Soil Conservation Service) . Portland, OR: Hotel Hoyt RARE, (Worldcat locates 2 copies) advertising brochure for the legendary Portland Hotel Hoyt. No Date, circa 191?. Near Fine, small (1/4") tears at folds. 1 folded sheet. ([6] pages) : color illustrations with color drawing of the hotel, color photos of two of the rooms and the lobby, rates, and 4 paragraphs of description. The hotel featured 200 rooms and 100 private baths. Built in 1912, the Hoyt closed in 1972 and was demolished in 1977. After its 1962 renovation by owner Harvey Dick, its nightclub Barbary Coast Lounge and Roaring 20s Room attracted celebrities such as Johnny Carson and Duke Ellington. . One Page,Folded Twice. Octavo. 554, xix pages The largest book stores in the West before the Gold Rush were in St. Louis and Chicago (though this would change as California became more settled in the next decade). The decline in the prices of books by the late 1870's is noted and the cost of acquiring sets of Dickens insnoted in terms of binding, etc at far below the prices even those with over 250 illustrations. After providing an early history of St. Louis, the author writes of the hundreds of businesses, churches, civic buildings most of which were gone by the early 1960's. The chapter on Ways That Are Dark discusses the schemes of thieves and swindlers that preyed on the citizens and visitors detailing exactly how the "pocket book dropping" scam, "snide jewelry sales", mock auctions to cheat the prospective bidder operated, all with illustrations.
