Illustrated with the forty-six original plates and containing a note on the origin and scope of the book: Limited to 1200 Numbered Copies, of which this is No. 578. "Now a word as to the origin of the book. This most curious work, may be roughly characterised as a sort of Catholic and Continental Foxe's Book of Martyrs, and which, like the latter collection of horrors, enjoyed an enormous vogue in the 17th and the earlier part of the 18th centuries, appeared originally at Rome in 1591. Father Gallonio's work was intended for the edification of the Faithful, and was issued with the full authority and approbation of the Church." from the Publisher's Note. Owner's info stamped on top edge front pastedown. Minor external wear with faintly foxed top text block edge, else, Pristine Interiior. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine.

Mild chipping to back cover and all edges slightly exposing boards. Minor scraping along top of back cover. Bumping to fore-edges. Tanning and minor soiling to edges of textblock. Light writing in pencil to top of first free edge. Age-toning to textblock consisting of English mould-made paper. Forty-six original full-page plates tipped in throughout. Shelved in Case 12. Originally written by Roman Priest Reverend Father Antonio Gallonio in the late 16th century under the title "De SS.
