Spine cloth glued down in amateur fashion. Spine cloth torn and frayed at head and tail of spine. Some staining and flecking to boards. Internally good. School prize label (Timaru Boys High School) dated 1909 on front endpaper. No tears to the folding map. A good reading or working copy.; xii, 467, [1] pages, with frontispiece + colour folding map + numerous illustrations, some full page. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering and illustration on spine. "The thick bamboo brake which clothed the south-west sides of the hills did its utmost to retard our advance. Not content with stiking us in the face, the canes lay low and tripped us when we stooped, and the mildest of our adversaries poured a few drops of water down our necks or relieved us of our head-gear. When we exchanged this vegetation, it was for barer height, among which often gleamed little grey-blue lochs; a scenery not unlike some parts of the Pyrenees. After a strenuous climb up a dry watercourse, we emerged upon the col. This pass over the mountains has a terrible reputation in snow. Natives hurry over it; song and gunshot are unheard under the great dread inspired by its solitude and many victims. And in truth, human skulls and shin-bones, a porringer, a fragment of a pipe, bore dreary testimony to the fate of unfortunate wayfaers overtaken by the cold. Out little band pressed on in silence among the sombre scattered rocks." - page 270.
