NY: Limited Editions Club, 2001. Celan-Lestrange, Gisele. Folio. (15)ff. One of 300 copies, signed by the translator, John Felstiner. Felstiner also provided the commentary, which appends this volume. Accompanied by an etched frontispiece by Gisele Celan-Lestrange, the French graphic artist and wife of the poet. Celan's celebrated poem, the title of which translates to "Deathfugue," reflects on the humanity and inhumanity of the Nazi destruction of Jews and their culture. His "ballad of suffering," written in German, the language of his parents' murderers, movingly intertwines trauma and loss, anger and longing. Bound in full gray cloth over boards, with paper label to upper cover. Fine, housed in drop-back box, with slightest wear. Interior of upper lid has CD-ROM of Celan reading his work. Prospectus laid in.
