Originally publishing run of just 3500 copies. The story, received with controversy, centered around a family of Georgia sharecroppers, the Lesters, during the worst years of the Great Depression. It was dramatized for Broadway by Jack Kirkland in 1933, and ran for eight years. ; fair .
