About This Item
Perth, 1896. A letter of introduction sent by John Forrest to the Agent General, London, introducing Dr. Leger Erson. Erson was a doctor with a long career in public health, active during the 1890s and early 1900s, holding positions in New Zealand, Philip Island and Woolamai, Victoria, and Adelaide. He was public vaccinator at Peak Hill, W.A. and advocated for safer conditions for miners. He was also a member of the Kalgoorlie Municipal Council. A newspaper article (see trove- reference available on request) recounts a case brought against him which seems to have been politically motivated and was dismissed.
Letterhead of the Premiers Office, Perth, 19th August 1896, signed "John Forrest". With the original envelope, addressed to London (secretarial). The letter states: This will serve to introduce to you Dr. Leger Erson, who has been in practice here some months now, and is visiting England on mining and Masonic matters..." 4pp, 5x8", text on first page only, old central fold. The envelope is addressed to "The Agent General, 15 Victoria Street, Westminster, London, England" with some unknown notations in the bottom left corner. Envelope a little dusty, letter in very good condition.
