New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. First printing, octavo size, 924 pp., in original dust jacket. Thomas Clayton Wolfe (1900-1938) died tragically young from complications from pneumonia; having already authored four lengthy novels and other assorted works and gained a reputation, one wonders what might have been. His literature had both ardent supporters as well as detractors, with Sinclair Lewis (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature), stating "that Wolfe could well become 'one of the greatest world writers' "; the opposing viewpoint put forth by the literary critic Harold Bloom who penned "There is no possibility for critical dispute about Wolfe's literary merits; he has none whatsoever".
Wolfe remains widely read, and his novels give us today a "powerful representation of both the hopes and the failures of America during the New Deal", writing about real people, their struggle and hopes, in the early part of the 20th century.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full black cloth with debossed gilt lettering on the front over stamped green rectangles themselves with gilt ruled horizontal borders, design and colours mirrored on the spine, publisher's device on the title page, first printing with the Scribner's seal and "A" on the copyright page, point on page 466 of "me" for "Eugene" on the penultimate line; octavo size (8 7/16" by 6.25"), pagination: [i-xii] [1-2] 3-912. Publisher's dust jacket with the original first issue price of $3.00, depiction of a river in shades of green on the front and spine with white lettering, back panel with black-and-white photo of Wolfe and the publisher's blurb/advertisement for this work, author bio and printed price on the front flap, review blurbs for Wolfe's previous work in the series, "Look Homeward, Angel" on the back flap.
___CONDITION: Fine overall, with clean boards, corners without rubbing (three straight, top front corner gently bumped), a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a bit of dustiness to the top edge of the text block, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket better than very good, the colours strong and deep, unfaded, minor toning to the verso and with slight overall edgewear.
___CITATION: Above quotes from the online American National Biography.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
