About This Item

Boston: Little Brown, 1966. Very rare book. Robert Cutler (1895-1974) was the first United States National Security Advisor. The position was created for him by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Cutler served in the United States Army, eventually being promoted to Brigadier General. Among his many honors, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Medal of Freedom. Stated First Edition 8vo size navy blue clothbound hardcover with gilt titles under dust jacket; 422 pages plus a section of black and white photographs From jacket: "Recalling a varied life of devotion to his country and some of its most important men, Robert Cutler takes us on a friendly tour of the corridors of power. We see Boston Mayor, later Governor and Secretary of Labor, Maurice Tobin... We see a sensitively drawn portrait of ... Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, who was Cutler's first boss in Washington. There are revealing glimpses of General George C. Marshall... and there is a vivid picture of James V. Forrestal... Through his friendship with Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Cutler was drawn into the inner circle supporting the candidacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Riding aboard Ike's 1952 campaign train as it crisscrossed the country, Cutler worked day and night on speeches and saw at first hand Eisenhower's harsh ordeal in politics at the hand of men like Jenner of Indiana and McCarthy of Wisconsin... (This book) is much more than a public portrait. It is also a warmly human remembrance of a childhood... and a nostalgic memoir of college years spent in that great era when the term "World War" had not yet been thought of... General Cutler has an unusual story to tell and he tells it well." Jacket has edgewear, some rubbing, discoloration or soil and foxing, notably on front, on folds and on the reverse. Jacket is tattered at head and heel of spine and has a half inch tear to bottom near spine. Fep has a tanned area (probably the result of a now gone newspaper clipping) and there is some light discoloration or tanning to endpapers. There is a spot in the top margin of page 53-57 and some light foxing on top of book. There are several previously creased page tips, resulting in lightly creased tips to about 20 or so preceding pages. Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their copyright holders.
