Oval stamp of the New York Society Library on the title page and on page 456, each with "Withdrawn" stamped over it, and the same oval stamp used (sometimes twice) on another 13 pages, often (but not always) in the margin of a new section or a section ending, but not obscuring the text. Gilt tooling on the spine also identifies this as formerly belonging to the New York Society Library. Very Good Condition: front hinge and spine archivally repaired (restorer's report available on request); edges rubbed; small loss of leather at ends of spine; ex-library as noted but no spine label or pocket; stain in lower margin of pp. 95-98; otherwise pages are clean and tight. A very scarce copy of an important early 19th-century work on religion and politics.

The ends of the spine and the corners are very slightly turned-in, a minor bump on the top corner of the back cover, a small nick at the top of the spine, the lettering on the spine is dulled, the front endpapers are age-toned, and there is a crack in the text block at p. 184. In a mylar wrapper. Includes Ernest Fenollosa (An Essay on the Chinese Written Character). (Ideas, Ideas, Literary Criticism).

This book is in good condition. There is a considerable amount of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is a small ink stain on the front cover board and the lettering is fading on the front and spine of the cover boards. The corners of the cover boards are bumped significantly. One of the previous owners name is affixed on the inside of the front cover board and the other previous owners name is written on the front end page. The pages are yellowed and tanned and there are some markings and underlining. "Scholarship in this country for long clung to the traditional view of the Fourth Gospel, and we still lack in English a satisfactory commentary on the whole text written from the standpoint of the more moderate among recent continental commentators. Bound in contemporary full calf with five gilt and raised bands and extensive decoration to the five compartments of the spine and a red spine label with gilt title to one compartment. Wear to the spine and to the edges, a little more to the top edge of the front board. Spine a little weak around page 202 with some loosening of a few leaves. Bound in beautiful modern brown calf with blindrolled border and gilt corner accents to both boards and new endpapers. Spine with four raised bands creating five compartments, each band set with gilt band above and below and red spine label with gilt "Prot:Dialog." An even scarcer variant of a scarce work.
