Cover nearly unworn, spine is faded and lettering barely readable, several small holes in front endpaper evidently from bookplate removal, inscription on verso, text is mildly age-toned but clean and unmarked, binding is tight. Scarce dust jacket is missing a 2 1/2 inch piece from lower spine and several smaller pieces from top edge. Wonderful pen and ink drawings by Pogany throughout text.

Lushly illustrated endpapers by Lang Campbell, with his color illustrations throughout the book, including 14 full-page color plates plus the title page. Dust jacket is also red, with a pastedown color illustrated panel that repeats the picture on the board. An inch-long piece missing from bottom and top of spine, and very light rubbing at corners. No price or any other information on flaps. 4to. Unpaginated. Uncommon in any condition but very uncommon in such great condition.

NY: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1906. 12mo, [viii] 277pp. Green cloth pictorially stamped in black and gold; t.e.g. 4 color plates. Light wear along edges, spine cloth with a bit puckered, tissue guard at frontispiece foxed with title page lightly so (but frontispiece unaffected), nonetheless a very sharp, clean, tight copy with stamped binding still bright.
First US edition and first Rackham-illustrated edition. A series of fantasy stories set in various periods of English history told to two children by various figures plucked out of history by Puck, the mischievous fairy from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Interestingly, only this US edition features the four color plates by Rackham, the British edition was instead illustrated solely in black-and-white by H.R. Millar.
