New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1899. Hardcover. Very good condition. Account of Hedin's first expedition of 16,000 miles through central Asia, during which he traveled in the region of the Pamir Mountains, the Tarim Basin, the Taklamakan Desert, Lake Bosten and Lake Kara Koshun in northwest China, before heading on to Tibet.
Hedin's works are quite scarce & sought after for their account of his courage and their thorough ethnographic & scientific record.
Lovely binding by W. Roach & Co. of New York. The engraved bookplate of C. Will Chappell "Old Orchard", at front paste down of each volume.
Tall 8vo. Volume I: frontispiece, xviii, 649 pp, folding map. Volume II: frontispiece, xii, pp 653- 1255, folding map. Three quarter green gilt morocco and marbled boards; spine with gilt raised bands and gilt decorated compartments. Covers slightly rubbed at edges; text and illustrations very bright and clean. OCLC: 601137589.
