About This Item
Richmond: Shepherd & Colin, 1838. . 8vo, printed pale green wrappers, soiled, extremities of spine chipped Signature of John Hartwell Cocke on the front free endpaper, dated November 15, 1838. "Progressive and prescient in all things, he promoted new agricultural methods, the founding of agricultural societies, the development of waterways and steam navigation." DAB. He fought with great brilliance in the War of 1812 and rose from Captain to Brigadier General in eighteen months. He was against Slavery, tobacco and was President of the American Temperance Union. He refused to run for public office although many attempts were made to persuade him to do so. Despite the many differences between the two men and Cocke's disapproval of some particulars of Thomas Jefferson's architectural plan, he cooperated with Jefferson on the building committee of the University of Virginia and was a member of the Board of Visitors for 33 years
