About This Item

London: The Macmillan Company, 1899. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, first printing. viii, 400, (2, ads) pp. Publisher's dark green ribbed cloth ruled in blind, with titles in gilt on spine, top edge gilt. An extremely influential socio-economic analysis of class in modern life, which, among other things, introduced the concept of "conspicuous consumption.

Synopsis

The Theory of the Leisure Class is a book, first published in 1899, by the Norwegian-American economist Thorstein Veblen while he was a professor at the University of Chicago. Veblen claimed he wrote the book as a perceptive personal essay criticizing contemporary culture, rather than as an economics textbook. Critics claim this was an excuse for his failure to cite sources.
