About This Item
New York: Spanierman Gallery, 1990. Softcover. New. BASEMENT. White & color illus. wraps. 187 pp., 150+ color and bw plates. This 1990 exhibition was put on for the benefit of the City University of New York. The Ten are: Frank W. Benson, William Merritt Chase, Joseph DeCamp, Thomas W. Dewing, Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf, Robert Reid, Edward Simmons, Edmund C. Tarbell, John H. Twachtman, and J. Alden Weir. (Which is 11, I know.) With essays by William Gerdts, Sheila Dugan, Ronald G. Pisano, Lauene Buckley, Susan Hobbs, Kathleen M. Burnside, Richard J. Boyle, H. Barbara Weinberg, Carol Lowrey, Lisa N. Peters and Doreen Bolger. Gerdts wrote the main essay "Ten American Painters: A Critical Chronology." Contains an essay on each artist, as well as a catalogue of the exhibition (listing 11 works exhibited), an extensive selected bibliography, and index to exhibitions of The Ten. A terrific catalogue packed with important, hard-to-find information and bibliographical research. Essential to the study of this group.
