Original pictorial cloth, gilt lettering to spine, Rubbed to spine. Corners bumped. Lightly toned. Inscribed dedication to Mary Elizabeth Darling from her affectionate brothers George E. and Douglas B. Foster, with associated genealogical material tipped in to fep and ffep, plus genealogical tree of the Foster family of Boston Massachusetts loosely inserted. "Samuel Foster" denoted lightly in pencil on xciii.

Mary Elizabeth Darling (maiden name Foster), (1852-1950) Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where many eminent Bostonians including the Foster family moved after March 1776 when the British evacuated Boston. Writer, founder of womens' mutual and intellectual organisations. Wife of the citrus grower, Lorenzo Franklin Darling, of Shamel House, (aka The Haunted House), Arlington Avenue, Riverside, California (originally also of Boston and Nova Scotia). Riverside was founded in 1870 as a utopian colony dedicated to education and culture. Mary Darling had great influence on the development of Riverside.

Red spine label with gilt lettering and edge rules. Blue endpapers. Title page slightly toned. Lacking half-title. Rubbing to spine edges. A crisp copy of the rarer London first edition.
In making a Papier Croisé, the final step required that the paper be lifted up and carefully moved while still wet. This caused the characteristic knotting in the design.
John Ledyard (1751-1789) American explorer and adventurer. Ledyard accompanied Cook on the third and final voyage 1776-1780.
