About This Item

New York: Harper's Magazine Press Book, 1970. Hardcover. Maps be Barbara Long. Small 4to. Grey cloth. 362pp. Maps (one folding), map endpapers. Near fine. Circular blind-embossed ownership stamp on half-title page and ownership last name inked on front flyleaf. First edition, with a nice autograph addition from artist BARBARA LONG, who provided the maps for this volume (and other Civil War titles): Tipped opposite the half-title page is a 6½" X 5" envelope, addressed in her hand to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold Gates (1914-93), Laramie, WY, 1983 December 16. Inside is a Christmas card from her, unsigned but with a friendly chatty holograph note from her to the Gates' discussing travel plans. Her husband E.B. "Pete" Long (1919-81), with whom she often collaborated on Civil War projects, had passed away the day after publication of "The Saints and the Union: Utah Territory during the Civil War," and widow Barbara here discusses her search for a place to settle down -- "I just cannot decide where to move, tho' I do want eventually to leave this cold climate, though Laramie is easy to live in & inexpensive.

Synopsis

This stirring and incisive chronicle to evoke precisely how it felt to be a Southerner during four of the most turbulent and harrowing years in American history.
